Today, the Nigerian football world mourns the loss of Gift Atulewa, a former youth international known for his skill and passion on the field. Atulewa, aged 38, passed away early on November 12 from complications related to high blood pressure. This sad news was confirmed by Azuka Chiemeka, the spokesperson for the Delta State Football Association.
Gift Atulewa’s death comes just a month after he buried his wife, marking a difficult period for his family and loved ones. He had recently completed a coaching course in Cote d’Ivoire, excited to begin a new chapter in football by sharing his knowledge with younger players. Tragically, he will not be able to put this training to use.
Atulewa began his football journey with Bayelsa United F.C., later playing for Ocean Boys F.C. and Warri Wolves F.C. He was also part of the Nigerian U-20 team that competed in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. This team held a special place in Nigerian football, but sadly, Atulewa is now the third player from that squad to pass away, following the losses of Olufemi Adebayo and Isaac Promise.
The Delta State Football Association and the entire Nigerian football community remember Atulewa as a talented, dedicated player who made a positive impact on and off the field. His legacy lives on through his contributions to the sport and the lives he touched.
May his soul rest in peace, and may his family find comfort during this challenging time.
