Ebonyi boundary dispute claims 2 lives

A renewed conflict between the Ogwo community in Ishiagu and Akaeze in Ebonyi State has led to the tragic loss of two lives. The tension between the two communities stems from a long-running boundary dispute that has caused violence for decades.

Chief Emmanuel Aja, the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, condemned the killings, expressing his shock and frustration over the incident. He vowed to bring those responsible to justice, stressing that no one involved in such violence would escape punishment. Aja also called on the security agencies to increase patrols in the area, especially in places most at risk of further attacks, to prevent any retaliation.

The conflict is rooted in a land dispute that has persisted for years, and the local government had been making efforts to resolve it. A committee formed by Aja had mediated between the two communities and proposed a solution that would divide the contested land this November, a plan that both communities had agreed to. Despite these efforts, the killings occurred, highlighting the deep divisions that still exist.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the deaths and said investigations were underway to determine the motive behind the killings and identify the perpetrators. The police are focused on bringing those responsible to justice, and the investigation is ongoing.

As the dispute continues to simmer, local leaders are urging both communities to put aside their differences and work toward peace to prevent further loss of life.
