In Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia, Abia State, an altercation between a 70-year-old man and local youths escalated into a tragedy, leading to the demolition of his home by enraged community members. The incident began when Stephen Irobunda, the elderly man involved, allegedly shot and killed Bright Odizuru, a 30-year-old youth, after a heated argument over a football game being played near his home.
On Saturday, November 2, due to a local election restricting movement, a group of youths decided to play football close to Irobunda’s house. According to sources, Irobunda had previously warned the youths to avoid playing so close to his property, but they ignored his requests. Frustrated, he went back into his house and returned with a gun, first firing it into the air as a warning. This alarmed the youths, who briefly dispersed but soon regrouped and returned to his home to confront him over the gunshots.
The confrontation grew tense, and Irobunda allegedly aimed his weapon at Odizuru, fatally shooting him in the abdomen. Odizuru’s death ignited anger within the community, and local youths attempted to attack Irobunda on the spot. However, police arrived in time to rescue him and bring him to safety.
Despite the police presence, the community’s frustration didn’t subside. On Tuesday, November 5, youths returned and demolished Irobunda’s home, venting their anger by destroying other belongings on his property as well. The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident, with ASP Maureen Chinaka stating that the investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department to determine the full details of the case.
This tragic event highlights the dangers of unresolved community disputes and the lengths people may go to when emotions run high.
