A heartbreaking accident in Nasarawa State has left a family grieving and demanding justice. A police officer allegedly caused the death of 35-year-old Patience Ashenenye after crashing into a commercial motorcycle carrying her and her three-month-old baby. The family’s refusal of the police’s N100,000 burial contribution reflects their push for accountability and justice. This incident has raised concerns over road safety and the conduct of officers while driving official vehicles.
The accident occurred near the School of Health, behind Ta’al Conference Hotel in Nasarawa. Patience Ashenenye was riding a motorcycle with her infant son, who suffered a broken leg in the crash, while the motorcycle rider, Tasiu Mohammed, sustained injuries. Sadly, Patience lost her life shortly after arriving at the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital. Her untimely death has left her family heartbroken and desperate for justice.
Two days after the tragedy, the family reported that two Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) visited to offer N100,000 towards Patience’s burial. However, her family refused the money, explaining they were more interested in justice than compensation. Speaking with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Patience’s brother, George Akube, shared that the officer responsible was allegedly speeding in a government-owned Hilux vehicle.
George expressed his family’s frustration and pain over the situation, emphasizing that while the officer survived, Patience did not. Her son, now recovering in the hospital, will have to grow up without his mother. The family is determined to see that justice is served, with George stating their desire to hold the responsible officer accountable.
Ramhan Nansel, the Nasarawa State Police Command spokesperson, responded by saying the police have launched an investigation. He mentioned that the officer involved was hospitalized due to shock, and the N100,000 offer was intended to help cover medical expenses for the injured. However, the Command has since pledged to cover all medical bills for those affected in the crash.
The Police Commissioner, Umar Shehu Nadada, expressed his condolences and emphasized the Command’s commitment to seeking justice. Although the spokesperson did not confirm if the officer involved would face legal charges, he assured the public that an investigation is underway to uncover the full details of the case.
For Patience Ashenenye’s family, justice means accountability and ensuring this incident does not go unresolved. While the Command has expressed sympathy and covered medical expenses, the family wants answers. Their refusal of the financial offer highlights the need for comprehensive action rather than just financial support.
