Gunmen attacked the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Edo State, Nigeria, on Sunday, October 27, 2024, abducting Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, the seminary’s rector. The incident took place in Etsako East Local Government Area while seminarians and priests were gathered for evening prayers.
The Catholic Diocese of Auchi confirmed the kidnapping in a statement issued on Monday. According to Reverend Father Peter Egielewa, Director of Communications for the diocese, the attack occurred around 7 PM. During the raid, the gunmen entered the seminary, interrupted prayers, and took Father Oyode, causing alarm and distress within the community.
The diocese has reported the kidnapping to law enforcement and is seeking help to secure Father Oyode’s release. All other priests and seminarians are safe and have been moved to a secure location. However, no contact has been established with the kidnappers as of yet.
Established in 2006 by Bishop Gabriel Dunia, the Immaculate Conception Seminary has played a vital role in training over 500 priests. The abduction of Father Oyode has raised concerns among the community and highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region. The Diocese of Auchi and the seminary community are hopeful for the priest’s safe and quick return.
