In an effort to improve safety and promote sustainable energy, the Lagos State Government has launched a project to install solar-powered streetlights in rural communities across the state. This initiative not only helps residents feel safer after dark but also supports environmental sustainability by reducing the demand on Nigeria’s main power grid.
The installation of these solar lights is aimed at improving nighttime visibility, enabling residents to move around more freely and securely. With increased street lighting, communities can expect a boost in safety, as well as reliable lighting that doesn’t depend on the often-unstable grid supply.
Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, announced specific communities that will benefit from these streetlights, including:
- Adeniyi Balogun Street in Epe Local Government Area
- Arowojobe Estate in Mende, Kosofe LGA
- New Haven CDA in Sagba Debo, Selewu in Igbogbo-Bayeku LCDA
- Lase Okunowo Street, off La Yakubu Street in Epe LGA
Some areas, like Ito Progressive Community in Isiu and Irebami Poromosan Estate, have already received 30 solar-powered streetlights, and prior installations were completed in the Ajah area. These lighting improvements are part of a larger plan led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to bring better infrastructure to rural communities across Lagos.
In addition to solar lights, the Lagos government has distributed four high-powered transformers to underserved areas within the Ikorodu Division. Communities like Valley View Estate in Olu-Odo, Oguntade-Oloja community in Odogunyan, as well as two others in Erikorodo and Imota, are now enjoying enhanced electricity.
Lagos State’s commitment to rural development aims to create lasting change by making essential services more accessible and dependable. This solar streetlight project is a step toward a brighter and safer future for all residents in Lagos.
