British actor Idris Elba has announced exciting plans to relocate to Africa within the next decade. His goal is to support and enhance the continent’s film industry. Elba is working on projects to build film studios in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and in Accra, Ghana.
At 52 years old, Elba is best known for his role in the acclaimed series The Wire. He has strong connections to Africa; his mother is Ghanaian, and his father is from Sierra Leone. Elba believes it is vital for Africans to tell their own stories, and he is committed to helping the film industry grow and thrive.
In an interview during an industry event in Accra, Elba expressed his intentions: “I’m going to live in Accra, I’m going to live in Freetown, I’m going to live in Zanzibar.” He wants to be in the countries where stories are being told, aiming to make a film in his studio in Accra someday.
Elba emphasizes that it is crucial for Africans to be involved in every part of filmmaking, from acting to production and distribution. He hopes to change the global perception of Africa, shifting away from narratives focused on trauma and conflict. Instead, he wants people to appreciate the continent’s rich cultures and diverse stories.
Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry, is already producing many films, showcasing the potential of Africa’s filmmaking. However, Elba acknowledges that the industry faces significant challenges, such as piracy and a lack of training and official support. A 2022 UNESCO report echoed this sentiment, noting that despite growth in production, the industry still struggles with these issues.
Elba believes that with government support and investment in storytelling, Africa’s film industry can flourish. He aims to inspire others by demonstrating that they can see themselves in these stories, ultimately making the industry stronger and more impactful.
