Jose Mourinho has spoken about Manchester United’s decision to end Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassador role, a position the former manager had held since retiring from coaching in 2013. The role, worth £2.16 million a year, was part of Ferguson’s long association with the club. However, the new Manchester United co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has decided to end the contract as part of cost-cutting measures.
Ferguson will step down at the end of the season, marking the end of an era for one of football’s most successful managers. His ambassador role was tied to promoting Manchester United globally, a position he had maintained for over a decade.
When asked about the decision, Mourinho, who is preparing his Fenerbahce team to face United in the Europa League, expressed his deep respect for Ferguson. “My relationship with Sir Alex was amazing, incredible,” Mourinho said. He hinted that more about their relationship will be revealed in his upcoming Netflix documentary, but he was clear that Ferguson’s importance to Manchester United goes far beyond any contract or money. “What matters most is the love and respect that Sir Alex has from every Manchester United fan worldwide,” he added.
Mourinho also reflected on his own time at Manchester United, which ended in 2018. He shared that he holds no negative feelings toward the club and continues to wish them the best. “I left with a good feeling toward the club and the fans. I always want the best for them, even if things aren’t going well now,” he said.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s contract was terminated by Ineos, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s company, as part of a broader effort to cut costs and restructure the club. Despite this, Ferguson’s legacy at Manchester United remains untouchable.
