As the November 2 local government elections in Abia State draw closer, Governor Alex Otti has announced that he will support candidates from outside his party, the Labour Party (LP). His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Ferdinand Ekeoma, confirmed this decision during an interview on ABN TV’s Political Perspective.
Hon. Ekeoma acknowledged that the Labour Party in Abia is currently facing internal challenges. Despite this, he assured that the candidates the governor supports will emerge victorious in the elections, regardless of their political party. The governor’s decision is based on the merit and capabilities of the candidates rather than their party affiliation.
This development follows reports suggesting that Governor Otti is aligning himself with the Zenith Labour Party amid the ongoing issues within the Labour Party. The move is similar to that of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who recently supported non-party candidates in local elections.
Political analysts have raised concerns, saying this kind of behavior could be seen as anti-party activity, which Governor Otti seems to be following. However, Ekeoma defended the governor’s actions, explaining that party primaries are internal affairs managed according to electoral laws. He stressed that Governor Otti is focusing on choosing candidates who will best serve the people of Abia State.
Ekeoma also addressed criticisms regarding the fairness of Labour Party primaries, emphasizing that the party values consensus and transparency. He noted that any disagreements during the primaries were resolved through discussions among stakeholders, ensuring a fair process.
Despite the ongoing challenges within the Labour Party, Governor Otti remains committed to supporting candidates he believes will effectively serve Abia State in the upcoming elections.
