The increasing insecurity in Abuja has become a major concern for many residents, as even public officials are not spared from the rising crime rates. On October 17, 2024, Nimah Sulaiman, the legislative aide of Hon. Ismail Dabo Haruna, was kidnapped and murdered by suspected “one-chance” criminals in Abuja. Despite paying the demanded ransom, the criminals still took her life.
Hon. Ismail Dabo Haruna, who represents the Toro Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, shared this heartbreaking story during a House of Representatives session on October 22. He explained that his aide was abducted at gunpoint near Bannex Junction in Wuse 2 while she was on her way home to Jahi District. Although the ransom was fully paid, her body was found later that night between Maitama and the Minister’s Hill Bridge.
The lawmaker expressed deep concern over the increasing crime rates in Abuja, particularly kidnappings and robberies by “one-chance” criminals. These criminals operate under the guise of taxis or public transportation, tricking passengers before robbing or harming them. Many residents of Abuja now live in constant fear as the security situation continues to deteriorate.
Hon. Haruna called on the government and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to protect the lives and property of citizens. The House of Representatives also took immediate steps, instructing its committees on Police Affairs, FCT, and National Security to investigate the incident thoroughly. They also summoned key figures such as the FCT Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to discuss solutions to the growing insecurity.
Additionally, the House has launched an investigation into the use of unregistered and unpainted taxis in Abuja, which are often used by criminals to commit these crimes. The aim is to regulate and monitor these vehicles more effectively, ensuring that they do not continue to serve as tools for criminal activities.
The brutal murder of Nimah Sulaiman has sent shockwaves through the community and stands as a reminder of the dangerous reality many face in Abuja. With rising crime and insecurity, urgent action is needed to restore safety and peace in Nigeria’s capital.
