U.S. Warns Israel to Increase Humanitarian Aid to Gaza or Risk Losing Military Funding

The United States has issued a warning to Israel, urging it to increase the amount of humanitarian aid entering Gaza or risk losing access to U.S. military funding. This comes after concerns that aid deliveries to the region have significantly dropped, leaving civilians in Gaza in desperate need of food, water, and medical supplies.

The letter, sent by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, was delivered to Israeli leaders. It emphasized the need for Israel to boost humanitarian aid deliveries to at least 350 trucks per day and ensure greater protection for aid workers. If Israel fails to meet these conditions within 30 days, it may face cuts to its military funding from the U.S.

This warning comes amid growing international concerns about the impact of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Since the conflict with Hamas escalated in October 2023, thousands of civilians in Gaza have been killed or injured due to airstrikes and bombings. Humanitarian groups report that aid entering Gaza has dropped to its lowest level in months, with only about 80 trucks arriving daily, down from 60 trucks before October. This reduced aid flow has worsened the living conditions for civilians caught in the conflict.

There are also fears that Israel may further restrict aid to northern Gaza, where many civilians have been unable or unwilling to leave due to the ongoing conflict. Aid groups worry that this could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe, as people are left without access to essential supplies.

The Biden administration has made it clear that while it continues to support Israel’s right to defend itself, it also expects Israel to comply with international humanitarian standards. U.S. officials reminded Israel that under international law, it must allow for the safe and unimpeded delivery of aid to civilians, especially in conflict zones.

The U.S. has been a long-standing ally of Israel and has provided billions of dollars in military aid. However, this latest move shows that the U.S. is willing to take a tougher stance on humanitarian issues. The administration has faced increasing pressure both domestically and internationally to ensure that Israel does not cause unnecessary civilian suffering in Gaza.

As the conflict continues, it remains to be seen how Israel will respond to the U.S. demands. For now, the Biden administration is making it clear that continued military support for Israel will depend on its ability to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
