In a troubling development for the community of Enugu State, authorities have arrested Dr. Emmanuel Ugwumba, a 52-year-old medical professional, on serious charges of child trafficking and forgery. The Enugu State Police Command announced the arrest through their Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who explained that the police apprehended Ugwumba following an investigation triggered by a public notice he issued about an abandoned child. Ugwumba had presented himself as the director of the Enugu State Ministry of Gender and Social Development in the notice, which was published in a national newspaper. This misuse of authority raised red flags among law enforcement.
Upon his arrest, investigators uncovered alarming details regarding Ugwumba’s activities. It was revealed that he was involved in child trafficking operations, having connections to a pregnant woman and two young girls, aged four and two. Dr. Ugwumba claims to have graduated in medicine and surgery from the University of Jos and is known to manage Chima Hospital and Maternity, located in Ugbaike Enugu-Ezike. However, his medical credentials and the operations of his hospital are now under scrutiny.
Further investigation by the police indicated that between 2017 and 2024, Ugwumba allegedly conspired with an individual claiming to be a staff member of the Ministry of Gender and Social Development.
