Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, is calling on Nigerians to put mental health awareness at the top of their priorities. In her message for World Mental Health Day, she emphasized the importance of seeking help early, encouraging people to access medical support and counseling before issues become overwhelming.
The First Lady’s call to action comes as this year’s World Mental Health Day theme shines a light on the workplace: “It’s time to make mental health a priority at work.” The message is clear—whether in our jobs or personal lives, mental health should be a priority.
Senator Tinubu also highlighted the impact of holding in emotions, explaining how unspoken feelings can eventually lead to serious mental health challenges. Her advice is a reminder that sharing our burdens can prevent larger issues down the line.
Finally, she encouraged Nigerians to look out for one another, promoting a supportive and safe society. “Let’s be our brother’s keeper,” she said, stressing how collective care can make a difference.
She said,
“Today I join the rest of the world to commemorate Mental Health Awareness Day.
“This year’s theme ‘It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace’ is timely especially in times like this when most people feel dissatisfied at the workplace for several reasons, that could affect one’s mental wellbeing.
“Emotions bottled up is the beginning of mental health issues and challenges that confront individuals.
“If there were no fears of stigmatization, people would tend to speak openly about their struggles, thus leading to early diagnosis thereby improving recovery outcomes.
“With love and support, mental health issues will be drastically reduced within and outside the workplace.
“Let us all commit to improving mental health awareness and enjoin individuals to seek medical help and counselling early.
“Please be your brother’s keeper for a safer society.”
Mental health is essential to overall well-being, and making it a priority can build a healthier, more resilient Nigeria.
