Nigerian Navy Arrests Three Individuals for Possessing Illegally Refined AGO in Bayelsa

The fight against illegal oil activities in Nigeria continues as the Nigerian Navy has made a significant arrest in Bayelsa State. On August 2, 2024, personnel from Operation DELTA SANITY apprehended three individuals in Igbomotoru, a community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

During a routine patrol, the Navy’s Ship SOROH discovered the suspects with two fiber boats and one wooden boat, all loaded with illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). This operation highlights the Navy’s proactive approach to tackling illegal bunkering, which is a serious issue affecting the country’s economy and environment.

Illegal bunkering refers to the theft or unlawful refining of crude oil. This practice not only poses a threat to the nation’s economy but also has devastating environmental impacts, including oil spills and pollution of local waterways. Bunkering operations often involve organized crime and can lead to violence and insecurity in affected communities.

The Nigerian Navy has been actively involved in curbing illegal oil activities through various operations and patrols along the country’s waterways. Operation DELTA SANITY is one of the key initiatives aimed at safeguarding the marine environment and ensuring the security of Nigeria’s oil resources. The Navy’s commitment to these operations underscores its role in protecting the nation’s interests and maintaining peace in the region.

The consequences of illegal bunkering extend beyond environmental damage. Local communities often suffer from reduced livelihoods and health issues related to pollution. The Navy’s efforts to arrest those involved in illegal oil activities are crucial not only for the protection of natural resources but also for the well-being of local populations.

“Subsequently, the suspects were handed over to operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation.”

The recent arrests made by the Nigerian Navy are a step forward in the ongoing battle against illegal oil operations. By taking action against illegal bunkering, the Navy is working to restore security and stability in the region, while also protecting the environment. As these efforts continue, it is vital for communities, local governments, and law enforcement to collaborate to ensure a sustainable future for Nigeria’s oil sector.

“After essential interrogation of the suspects, the patrol team discovered and impounded a large wooden boat laden with illegally refined products in Bassambiri, Bayelsa State.

“The suspects were later handed over to operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Nembe, Bayelsa State,”
