In a bold move to combat rising insecurity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a serious warning to bandits, terrorists, and other criminal groups in Nigeria. During a recent lecture organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that the time for tolerance has ended. “Enough is enough. This has to stop. And it will stop. This is a warning to them. They have limited time,” he declared.
The President was represented at the event by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who outlined the urgent need for decisive action against those threatening the nation’s peace. This lecture was centered around the theme “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024): Dissecting Nigeria’s challenges – genesis, impacts, and options,” where various security challenges affecting Nigeria and the broader Sahel region were discussed.
President Tinubu made it clear that the Nigerian government can no longer accept insecurity and is ready to take all necessary measures to restore peace. “We will not tolerate insecurity any longer. The government is prepared to take strong actions to ensure the safety of all Nigerians,” he stated.
He highlighted the importance of creating a peaceful environment, urging criminal groups to surrender while there is still time. “Our windows are open, our doors are open if they are ready to come and surrender and stop; otherwise, they know what is going to happen to them,” he warned. This approach indicates a dual strategy of offering an opportunity for surrender while also preparing for a firm response.
President Tinubu also spoke about the need to tackle the root causes of insecurity, which include poverty and lack of employment. He noted that the government has established various institutions aimed at promoting accountability and addressing these underlying issues through initiatives focused on job creation, infrastructure development, and social services.
“We have developed both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in considerably eliminating the threats of Boko Haram, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and violent extremists,” he explained, signaling a comprehensive approach to security that includes both military action and social reforms.
As the Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Tinubu is also focused on enhancing regional cooperation in the fight against insecurity. He emphasized the importance of sharing intelligence and coordinating security efforts with neighboring countries to tackle common threats in the Sahel region.
This collaborative approach is crucial, as insecurity often transcends borders. By working together with other nations, Nigeria aims to create a unified front against criminal elements that threaten peace in the region.
Tinubu expressed optimism regarding recent military successes, praising the Nigerian armed forces for their renewed offensive against criminal groups in the Northeast and Northwest. He stated, “Our citizens can now heave a sigh of relief. We shall continue to provide our armed forces with the needed human and material resources to achieve success.” This statement underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the military in its fight against insecurity.
He highlighted significant achievements, such as the elimination of over 300 Boko Haram commanders and a noticeable decline in kidnapping incidents for ransom. These successes serve as a testament to the government’s efforts and determination to restore safety and security to the affected regions.
In his concluding remarks, President Tinubu delivered a clear message to criminal leaders: surrender now, or face the consequences. “If they refuse to surrender, the same fate awaits them,” he warned, emphasizing that the government is serious about dealing with those who refuse to abandon their criminal activities.
President Tinubu’s firm stance against bandits and terrorists marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against insecurity. His call for both surrender and accountability reflects a balanced approach that seeks to restore peace while addressing the deeper issues that contribute to violence and instability. As the government continues to ramp up efforts to secure the nation, the hope is that these actions will lead to a safer and more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
