In a heated social media exchange, popular Afrobeats singer Wizkid, also known as Ayodeji Balogun, accused wealthy Nigerians of using poverty to make the less fortunate “worship” them. His comments came during an ongoing feud with fellow artist Davido, which began on Tuesday night and continued the following day.
Wizkid claimed he is richer and more successful than Davido, who he described as a “spoilt rich kid” due to his wealthy background. He also criticized Davido for being “cheap” and charging less than many other artists in the music industry. In his tweets, Wizkid confidently stated, “First off, you’re not as fly as me, can’t sing or make music like me, you can’t dress, you don’t make more money than me.”
In his posts, Wizkid argued that Davido surrounds himself with poor people to boost his own status, suggesting that the rich in Nigeria intentionally keep the poor close to maintain control. He wrote, “Naija is a place the rich weaponize poverty so you carry all these broke boys in real life and get dem visa so they worship u.”
Wizkid further dismissed Davido’s self-proclaimed title of “001” in the Nigerian music scene, stating that this title is meaningless and only relevant when Davido is at home. He insisted that Davido does not earn more than anyone else in the industry, concluding his series of tweets by labeling him as “cheap.”
This social media feud highlights the ongoing tensions within the Nigerian music scene and raises questions about the relationship between wealth and influence.
