The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has ordered an immediate investigation into serious bribery allegations involving popular Nigerian socialite, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky. The claims surfaced on September 24th through a viral audio recording released by social activist, Very Dark Man. In the audio, Bobrisky is heard stating that he paid N15 million to unnamed EFCC officials in exchange for having money laundering charges against him dropped.
This controversy comes after Bobrisky faced legal charges earlier this year. In April, the EFCC brought six charges against him, four related to Naira abuse and two concerning money laundering. While the money laundering charges were surprisingly dropped when he appeared in court, he was still sentenced to six months in jail on April 12th for Naira abuse after being found guilty.
Adding to the drama, Bobrisky also claimed in the audio that a high-ranking figure made a phone call to the head of the Nigeria Prisons Service, ensuring that he wouldn’t spend time in prison. Instead, he was allegedly housed in a private apartment near the correctional facility.
In response to these allegations, the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, released a statement confirming that the EFCC Chairman has assembled a team to investigate the matter. The investigation will focus on whether EFCC officers accepted the alleged bribe and if Bobrisky received any special treatment during his time in custody.
As this story unfolds, all eyes will be on the findings of the EFCC’s investigative team and the outcome of this high-profile case.
