General Abdulsalami Abubakar Expresses Concern Over Escalating Economic Crisis

Former Nigerian Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has raised serious concerns about the increasing economic hardship facing Nigerians. Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights at his residence in Minna, Niger State, General Abubakar warned that the economic situation is worsening and becoming unmanageable.

He pointed out that many Nigerians are finding it hard to afford even the most basic necessities such as food and transportation. He mentioned the high cost of fuel, rising school fees, and general lack of funds as key issues affecting people’s daily lives.

“Everyone is feeling the pressure from the current hardship. People can’t afford three meals a day, and the cost of transportation and fuel is getting out of hand,” General Abubakar said.

The former head of state revealed that he is part of a group that has made several recommendations to the federal government to ease the economic burden on Nigerians. One of these suggestions is for the government to buy food in bulk and sell it to citizens at lower prices, making it more affordable for everyone.

“Simply giving out palliatives is not a real solution. The government needs to provide affordable food by buying it and selling it at reduced prices so people can afford to feed their families,” he added.

General Abubakar also called for peaceful protests, particularly ahead of the planned #EndBadGovernance protests on October 1. He reflected on previous protests that led to violence, theft, and destruction, urging people to avoid such behavior during future demonstrations.

“In past protests, we saw a lot of unnecessary violence, looting, and destruction. People went into private homes, and there was chaos. Protests should be peaceful, and not cause harm to others,” he warned.

During the visit, Abdullahi Jabi, the leader of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, congratulated General Abubakar on his birthday and urged him to keep pushing for solutions to Nigeria’s economic problems.
