The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is facing internal challenges, and its acting chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, has pointed to Senator Dino Melaye as part of the problem. In a recent interview, Damagum highlighted that during the 2024 governorship election in Kogi State, Melaye, who was the party’s candidate, did not even vote for himself.
Damagum expressed disappointment in Melaye’s lack of commitment, emphasizing that this action reflects poorly on his loyalty to the PDP. The chairman further mentioned that Melaye’s behavior contributed to the party’s struggles, especially after Melaye publicly referred to the PDP as a “once upon a time party.”
Damagum stressed that when someone is given the party’s platform, they are expected to help strengthen its reputation and work toward its success. He acknowledged that while losing is sometimes part of the process, candidates should at least give a strong effort and lose “credibly,” rather than showing the lack of dedication Melaye displayed.
The chairman’s comments have sparked a larger conversation about party loyalty and the responsibilities that come with running for office. Whether Melaye will respond to these criticisms remains to be seen, but it is clear that Damagum and the PDP expect more commitment from their candidates.
