The Nigerian government has expressed its displeasure over the poor treatment of its citizens by Royal Air Maroc in Morocco. This response follows the circulation of videos and photos on social media showing Nigerian passengers who were left to sleep on the floor at the Marrakesh airport.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation, made it clear that the federal government cannot accept the inhumane treatment Nigerian passengers experienced. He stated that the government takes such issues seriously and will not tolerate such disrespect towards its citizens.
The incident occurred after the plane carrying the passengers developed a technical problem, forcing it to stop in Marrakesh. The unexpected delay left many passengers stranded without proper care or accommodation.
Reacting to the situation, Keyamo demanded that Royal Air Maroc immediately provide relief and assistance to the affected passengers. He emphasized that the airline must ensure that such incidents do not happen again, and Nigerian passengers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
The government’s swift response is a strong message to airlines that Nigerian passengers should not be mistreated under any circumstances. The Aviation Ministry is closely monitoring the situation to ensure compliance with its directive.
Keyamo wrote: “I have just been informed of the inhumane treatment some Nigerians have been subjected to by ROYAL AIR MAROC in Marrakesh, Morocco.
“My information is that the flight took off from Casablanca and was headed for Abuja, but had to make an emergency landing in Marrakesh for some technical reason(s).
“However, the passengers, majority of whom are Nigerians, have been left without care at the terminal and without food and decent shelter, with women and children sleeping on the floor!
“Whilst I call on ROYAL AIR MAROC to immediately remedy this situation, I have directed the Consumer Protection Department of the NCAA to immediately engage ROYAL AIR MAROC NIGERIA to bring immediate relief to these Nigerians.”
