Anambra State has put a stop to scavengers who collect iron scraps, known locally as “iron condemn,” due to their disruptive and illegal activities. These scavengers have been involved in stealing metal from public services, private properties, and causing damage to essential infrastructure.

Paul Nwosu, the Commissioner for Information, explained that these scavengers have negatively impacted both the state’s and the country’s economy. In response, the government has announced that anyone found selling scraps to these scavengers will face arrest and legal action for handling stolen goods.

To help differentiate between illegal scavengers and legitimate scrap metal dealers, the Ministry of Environment will now register and certify authorized scrap dealers. This will help ensure that only approved businesses can operate without issues.

Enforcement of this new ban will be handled by the OCHA and SASA brigades. They will be on the lookout for any scavengers and take action to remove them from the state. The public is encouraged to report any scavenger activities to the authorities to help with quick enforcement.

This ban is a crucial move in maintaining order and protecting both public and private properties from theft and vandalism in Anambra State.
