On September 11, 2024, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) executed a decisive airstrike operation against terrorists in Bassa, Niger State, as part of Operation WHIRL PUNCH. This operation was aimed at dismantling terrorist activities in the region.
During the mission, NAF aircraft targeted a large group of over 100 terrorists who were engaged in a fierce firefight with Nigerian troops. The airstrikes were highly effective, resulting in the neutralization of many of the terrorists. Group Captain Kabiru Ali, the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, confirmed that 28 bodies were recovered from the site. The ongoing recovery efforts include locating additional terrorists, weapons, and burnt motorcycles.
This successful operation demonstrates the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to national security and its role in supporting other security agencies in the fight against banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. The NAF emphasizes that it will continue to carry out air operations both independently and in coordination with ground forces to ensure the safety and security of Nigeria.
The Air Force also called upon the public to assist by providing crucial information that could help in further operations against terrorists and criminal groups. Their efforts are part of a broader strategy to eliminate threats to the nation’s peace and stability.
