The Labour Party’s National Working Committee has recently raised concerns about the alleged misuse of campaign funds meant for the 2023 presidential election. They are calling on the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate prominent individuals involved in the campaign, including Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, and Afenifere leaders.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, during a press conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, emphasized the need for this investigation. He expressed frustration over recent statements made by Aisha Yesufu, a social activist, who has been defending herself against allegations of misappropriating the campaign donations. According to Arabambi, these funds, reportedly over N12 billion and $15 million, were meant to support the Labour Party’s efforts during the 2023 election but were diverted.
The Labour Party has accused Yesufu, along with Pastor Itua Ighodalo and other involved individuals, of playing a role in this alleged misuse of funds. Arabambi dismissed Yesufu’s claims of innocence, calling her statements an attempt to cover up financial misconduct. He criticized her comments as being disrespectful to the party’s leadership and insisted that the matter needed to be properly addressed.
In addition to Yesufu and Pastor Ighodalo, Arabambi alleged that some Afenifere leaders—Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Akin Osuntokun, and Sola Ebiseni—were also involved in financial wrongdoings. He accused them of keeping more than N600 million in private and Afenifere-related accounts. According to him, Peter Obi had recruited these individuals to steal from the Labour Party’s campaign fund, while they falsely portrayed themselves as respected figures in society.
These serious accusations have raised eyebrows, but so far, neither the Afenifere leaders nor Peter Obi’s team have responded to the claims. As the call for investigation gains momentum, all eyes are on the NSA and EFCC to see how they will handle the situation.
