IGP Orders Arrest of Officer for Political Comments on Edo Election
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered the arrest and investigation of a Supernumerary (Spy) Police Officer who made unauthorized political comments about the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election.
A video circulating on social media shows the officer, dressed in a Spy Police uniform, making strong statements against the current Edo State governor. The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that this individual is not a regular member of their force but a Supernumerary Police Officer. These officers are trained by the NPF but are hired by private companies and are not on the police payroll. They are permitted to hold personal political views, unlike regular officers who must remain neutral.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, condemned the officer’s use of the Spy uniform for political purposes and emphasized that the officer’s comments do not reflect the NPF’s official stance. The officer has been detained for further investigation, and the public is urged to disregard his statements and trust in the police’s commitment to neutrality and professionalism.
In the video, the officer expressed a desire to see legal action against the governor, Obaseki, once his constitutional immunity ends, which has raised concerns given the officer’s use of official attire for such statements.
