In an unexpected turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign has called for a second presidential debate against former president Donald Trump, just moments after their first debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Despite previously rejecting the idea of more than one debate, Harris’s team now feels that another showdown is necessary for voters to fully see the contrast between the two candidates.

The first debate, hosted by ABC, allowed Americans to witness what Harris campaign Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon described as a clear choice: moving forward with Harris or reverting back to Trump’s policies. “Vice President Harris is ready for a second debate. Is Donald Trump?” O’Malley Dillon challenged, adding that Harris “commanded the stage on every single issue” and that Trump appeared “totally incoherent.”

Harris’s campaign was quick to declare her the winner of the debate, projecting confidence in her performance. This strong showing was in contrast to Trump’s recent debate with former president Joe Biden in June, a debate that was so disastrous for Biden that it led to calls within his party for him to step aside, which he eventually did.

Before the debate, Trump had repeatedly criticized ABC News and even questioned whether he would participate, particularly objecting to the rule that allowed the candidates’ microphones to be muted when it wasn’t their turn to speak. Despite these concerns, the debate went on, and now Harris’s team is pushing for round two in October.

With the first debate now behind them, all eyes are on how Trump will respond to the call for another high-stakes face-off next month.
