Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of using security forces to harass and intimidate Nigerians. She pointed out that these actions are happening during a time when citizens are already facing severe economic difficulties.
Ezekwesili advised the Nigerian government to avoid making things worse, questioning whether they have any remaining wisdom. Her comments follow the recent arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero by the Department of State Services (DSS) and a visit by the DSS to the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Abuja. Ajaero has since been released.
In a post on her X account on Tuesday, Ezekwesili emphasized that Nigerians, acting together, will no longer tolerate any form of oppressive governance. She also outlined three key actions that President Tinubu should take to calm the growing tension in the country.
Firstly, she called on the DSS and the Nigerian Police to immediately follow the law by releasing Ajaero, leaving SERAP alone, returning any confiscated documents, repairing damaged property, and compensating those affected for their losses.
Secondly, she demanded the release of all protesters who were detained during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement. She argued that these individuals are being held or prosecuted without valid reasons, driven by the intolerance of President Tinubu and his administration, who came to power through an election that lacked credibility.
Finally, Ezekwesili urged the President and the National Assembly to begin plans for a national conversation and constitutional process led by citizens. She warned that if there is any wisdom left in the government, they should stop worsening the situation, as Nigerians united will not accept oppressive rule again.
