Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei is fighting for her life after a horrific attack by her ex-boyfriend. The incident occurred after Cheptegei returned to Kenya following her participation in the Paris Olympics. Police reports indicate that her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, allegedly set her on fire during a dispute at her home in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya.
According to the Trans Nzoia County Police Commander, Jeremiah ole Kosiom, Ndiema bought a can of petrol, poured it on Cheptegei, and ignited the fire during an argument. Cheptegei’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, shared that the conflict stemmed from a disagreement over a piece of land his daughter owns in Endebes, Trans Nzoia. He expressed shock and confusion over why Ndiema, with whom his daughter had reportedly ended her relationship long ago, would commit such a violent act.
The attack happened on a Sunday afternoon when Cheptegei and her children were returning home from church. Police report that Ndiema had sneaked into the compound while they were away, and when Cheptegei returned, he carried out the attack. Witnesses reported hearing the couple quarrelling outside their house before seeing Ndiema pour petrol on Cheptegei and set her ablaze. The fire also caught Ndiema, causing him serious burns.
Cheptegei was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she is currently in critical condition. Dr. Owen Menach, who is treating her, stated that she sustained severe external and inhalation burns and is fighting for her life. Ndiema is also being treated at the same hospital, where he is in a more stable condition.
The Ugandan Athletics Federation confirmed the attack and expressed their deep concern for Cheptegei’s condition. This tragic incident has shocked the athletics community and highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence.
