At Least 4 Killed, 30 Injured In Shooting At Apalachee High School In Georgia

A tragic shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, leaving at least four people dead and around 30 others injured on Wednesday. One person has been arrested as police continue to investigate. Some of the injuries were caused by gunshots, but it’s unclear how many. Nine people were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Helicopter footage from Atlanta News First showed one person being airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, while ambulances rushed to help others on the scene. Barrow County Schools placed all schools on a soft lockdown, advising parents not to pick up their children until further notice. Currently, only parents of Apalachee High School students have been allowed to reunite with their children.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith shared in a press conference that the situation is still being assessed. He confirmed multiple injuries but declined to go into detail, stating that it would take time to get clear answers. A later update is expected at 4 p.m.

Top officials, including U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, expressed their sadness and support for the affected families. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris urged Congress to take stronger action on gun control, calling for measures such as universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons to prevent further tragedies like this.
