Afrobeats superstar, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has shown immense gratitude to Christ Embassy Church in Benin, Edo State, by donating ₦105 million. This generous act comes as a heartfelt acknowledgment of the support and kindness his family received from the church during one of the most challenging times in his life.
On Sunday, September 1, 2024, Rema was invited on stage during a church service, where he recounted how the church played a crucial role in his family’s survival after the loss of his father. At just eight years old, Rema experienced the devastating loss of his dad, leaving his family in a difficult position. He shared that they felt lost and abandoned, with all they had taken away from them. In their time of need, the pastors of Christ Embassy, Pastor Joy and Pastor Thomas, stepped in to help. They opened a shop for his mother, which became the means by which she could take care of her children.
In recognition of the church’s unwavering support, Rema pledged ₦40 million towards the development of the church’s infrastructure. Additionally, he committed ₦20 million to “Rhapsody of Realities,” a Christian devotional distributed by the church. Given his connection to the teen’s church, where he grew spiritually, he also pledged ₦25 million for its infrastructure. Furthermore, he donated ₦20 million to assist widows within the church.
Rema’s visit to Edo State is part of his homecoming tour, where he is scheduled to perform in a highly anticipated concert. His time in Benin has been filled with significant moments, including attending the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena—a 6,000-capacity venue named in his honor by Governor Godwin Obaseki. Rema also paid his respects to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, at the royal palace, where he entertained the monarch.
This act of giving back to the community that supported him during his formative years showcases Rema’s deep sense of gratitude and his commitment to uplifting others, especially those who may be facing the same struggles his family once did.
