In the early hours of Monday, gunmen suspected to be sea pirates kidnapped 10 travelers along the Bonny-Port Harcourt waterway. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of those using this route.
According to Israel Pepple, the Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria in Rivers State, the kidnapping is confirmed, and it’s not just a rumor. “It is real. Ten persons have been kidnapped this morning while coming from Bonny to Port Harcourt,” he stated. The Maritime Workers Union has already informed the relevant security agencies, hoping for a swift response.
However, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has yet to be fully briefed on the matter. He assured the public that more details would be shared as soon as they are available, indicating that investigations are likely underway.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maritime security in the region, where sea piracy and kidnappings have become a major concern. Travelers and authorities alike are on high alert, hoping that the victims will be safely rescued soon.
