In a disturbing event between Kwaku and Gawu villages in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a suspected motorcycle thief met a tragic end at the hands of a mob.
The incident occurred around 3 PM on Sunday, aligning with Kwaku’s market day. According to Samson Ishaya, a local resident, the trouble began when two men allegedly stole a motorcycle at a drinking joint situated behind the market. A man at the joint noticed the theft and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby commercial motorcyclists.
The motorcyclists quickly pursued the suspects. During the chase, the two thieves lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. One of the men managed to escape, but the other wasn’t so fortunate. The mob caught him, and in a brutal act of mob justice, set him on fire, resulting in his death.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands. Mob justice, while often fueled by anger and a desire for swift retribution, can lead to tragic outcomes and the loss of lives. It’s a situation that underscores the importance of relying on the legal system to address crimes and deliver justice.
While the anger and frustration of the community are understandable, it’s crucial to remember that everyone is entitled to a fair trial. Acts of mob justice only create more violence and can lead to irreversible mistakes. As a society, we must strive to uphold the rule of law and trust in the legal process to handle such matters appropriately.
