A tragic incident unfolded in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where a lawyer named Sunday Onunu is accused of accidentally killing an orphan, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo, during a community election celebration.
The event took place during the election organized by the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney group, a community organization responsible for managing land dealings in the area. The group was electing new leaders to oversee its activities. Onunu, who serves as the group’s legal counsel, reportedly began shooting into the air to celebrate the election victory of one of his loyalists. Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Ugo in the nose, exiting through his mouth and resulting in his immediate death.
Nnamdi Ugo, who was already facing the hardships of being an orphan with no close relatives, lost his life in this senseless incident. Disturbingly, there are reports that distant relatives of the deceased are being offered money to keep the matter quiet and cover up the tragedy.
The incident was captured on video, which has since gone viral on social media, showing Onunu wearing a yellow T-shirt and firing his gun into the air.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed Onunu’s arrest, though details surrounding the case remain under investigation. The Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, acknowledged the arrest but did not provide further details on the case.
This tragic incident has shocked the community, raising questions about the safety and conduct of those in positions of responsibility.
