In the past two weeks, security forces in Enugu State have successfully neutralized over 30 suspected kidnappers and criminals in a series of operations. This significant achievement includes members of the Biafra Auto Pilot, also known as Unknown Gunmen, a notorious faction that broke away from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and is loyal to Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based leader. This group has been a source of terror in Enugu and surrounding areas.
According to reports from the police, the suspected criminals were killed during intense gun battles with security operatives at various locations across the state. These operations are part of a broader, sustained effort to cleanse the state of criminal elements and restore peace to its residents.
One of the most notable operations was led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Onochie Ezeh. It took place early Wednesday morning at Ugwuogo Nike-Opi Road, where security forces successfully rescued several kidnapped victims. During this operation, a seven-man gang of kidnappers was neutralized at Ogbeke Nike. The criminals had been using a large poultry farm as a hideout for their hostages, demanding ransoms from the victims’ families.
SP Ezeh shared that the police had been tracking this particular group of kidnappers for over three months. The operation was initiated after receiving a tip-off from local residents who had noticed unusual activities in the area. When the security forces arrived, the kidnappers opened fire, but the police quickly retaliated and overpowered them, thanks to their superior firepower.
This successful mission is just one part of the ongoing efforts by a combined security task force set up by Governor Peter Mbah. The task force is dedicated to combating kidnappings, attacks by unknown gunmen, and other forms of crime in the state. Since its formation, the task force has made significant progress, dismantling several criminal gangs and bringing a sense of security back to the community.
SP Ezeh emphasized that the security forces are committed to continuing these operations until all threats are eradicated. Governor Mbah has made it clear that the safety of Enugu’s citizens is a top priority, and the security operatives will not rest until the state is completely rid of criminal elements. The success of these recent operations serves as a strong message to criminals: their activities will not be tolerated, and they will be met with decisive action.
