Born in the United States, Maria experienced a lifetime of history, living through two world wars and witnessing significant changes in the world. For the past 20 years, she resided in a nursing home in the town of Olot, located in northeastern Spain.

Maria’s family announced her passing on social media, expressing that she died as she had wished—in her sleep, peacefully and without pain. “Maria Branyas has left us,” they wrote on her social media account. “We will always remember her for her advice and her kindness.”

In her final social media post, Maria shared a heartfelt message that touched many: “The time is near. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears. And above all, don’t suffer for me. Wherever I go, I will be happy.”

Maria Branyas Morera was recognized as the world’s oldest person in January 2023, following the death of French nun Lucile Randon at 118 years old. After Maria’s passing, Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who is 116 years old, now holds the title of the world’s oldest living person, according to the US Gerontology Research Group.

Maria’s long life, filled with kindness, wisdom, and resilience, leaves a lasting legacy. She will be remembered by many around the world for her gentle spirit and her extraordinary life.
