In celebration of Isese Day, the Lagos State government has declared Tuesday, August 20, 2024, as a work-free day for all public workers. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this announcement through a circular signed by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro.

Isese Day is an annual celebration of the traditional Yoruba religion, Ìṣẹ̀ṣe. This religion represents the spiritual and cultural practices of the Yoruba people, who predominantly reside in Southwestern Nigeria in states like Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, and more. Yoruba culture also extends to neighboring countries such as Benin and Togo.

This holiday allows traditional worshippers to celebrate their beliefs, rituals, and cultural heritage. Public offices, including courts in Lagos State, will remain closed on Tuesday, August 20, to honor the occasion and will reopen on Wednesday, August 21.

The celebration of Ìṣẹ̀ṣe helps preserve the rich cultural traditions of the Yoruba people, offering them a day to express their faith and spirituality. This work-free day gives everyone a chance to acknowledge the importance of these cultural practices.

According to the circular

 “It is hereby notified for general information that this Year’s Isese Day Celebration will hold on Tuesday, 20th August 2024. In emphasizing commitment to give necessary support to traditional institutions, as well as enhance the promotion of indigenous tradition by preserving cultural heritage, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved that Tuesday, 20th August, 2024, be declared a Work Free Day for Public Servants in the State.

Consequently, work resumes on Wednesday, 21 August, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. Accordingly, all Accounting Officers are enjoined to note the contents of this Circular and give it the deserved Service-wide publicity”.

By declaring a holiday for Isese Day, the Lagos State government reaffirms its commitment to respecting and preserving the diverse religious practices in the region.
