The Edo State government has launched a major crackdown on cultism, arresting 11 suspects across various locations in the state. This move is part of a broader effort to combat the rise in cult-related violence, which has claimed the lives of many young people.
The state’s Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, spoke about the ongoing operation during a press briefing, stating that the Anti-Cultism Task Force, established by Governor Godwin Obaseki, is working around the clock to rid the state of cult activities. According to Nehikhare, no individual, regardless of their political, religious, or social standing, will be protected if found guilty of engaging in cultism.
Since the formation of the task force, which is made up of eight security outfits and four ministries, there has been a clear and determined effort to crack down on cultism. Nehikhare revealed that apart from arresting suspects, the task force has also focused on educating the public and engaging with communities to discourage young people from joining cult groups.
Some of the recent arrests include three suspects from the Auchi Polytechnic community on August 7, 2024. Just days later, on August 10, the task force, acting on a tip-off, raided a hotel in Benin City where a cult meeting was taking place, resulting in the capture of two more suspects. Another major arrest occurred on August 13, when a key cult leader in the Ekosodin area was apprehended. By August 14, five more notorious cultists, including leaders and a butcher, were taken into custody.
Nehikhare emphasized that the task force will not stop until every cultist in the state is brought to justice. He also issued a strong warning to cult members, urging them to renounce their affiliations before it’s too late. He called on parents to stay vigilant and guide their children away from cultism.
Governor Obaseki has made it clear that the state’s new anti-cultism law will be fully enforced. The government remains determined to restore peace and security to Edo State and will continue its mission to eliminate cultism once and for all.
This operation marks a critical step in ensuring the safety of Edo State’s citizens, especially the youth, and is a powerful message that cultism will not be tolerated.
