The Anambra State Government has recently intensified its efforts to combat the exploitation of children by begging syndicates in Awka. In a significant operation, 16 individuals, including both adults and children, were apprehended for their involvement in these activities.
The Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, in partnership with the Awka Capital Development Authority (ACTDA), led the crackdown. According to Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, the flyover bridge at Aroma Junction had long been a hotspot for child beggars controlled by these syndicates.
This decisive action reflects the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and dismantling the networks that exploit them for alms.
