Former President Donald Trump has recently ignited a heated debate by challenging Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity. Trump has shared a range of content aimed at questioning Harris’ claim to being Black, including a photograph of her in traditional Indian attire and an alleged copy of her birth certificate.
In his social media posts, Trump highlighted a picture of Harris wearing Indian clothing, accompanied by her mother and other relatives. He used this image to argue that Harris’ racial identity might not be as she claims. Trump’s criticism follows his earlier remarks at the National Association of Black Journalists conference, where he suggested that Harris had only recently identified as Black, previously identifying as Indian.
The controversy deepened when Trump’s campaign posted a headline referring to Harris as the “first Indian-American senator” from California. Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, supported Trump’s comments, praising him for his bravery in addressing these contentious issues and describing Harris as a “chameleon.”
Additionally, Trump shared posts from Laura Loomer, a far-right figure, who claimed that Harris’ birth certificate proves she is not Black. Loomer argued that the birth certificate does not list Harris as Black or African, although it does indicate her Jamaican heritage. Loomer further alleged that Trump was correct to question Harris’ identity, even asserting that she is a descendant of slave owners.
Trump has also reposted a video of Harris cooking Indian food with actress Mindy Kaling, mocking Harris for her statements about her Indian heritage. In his posts, Trump criticized Harris for allegedly switching her racial identity, calling her “crazy” for saying she is Indian rather than Black.
Kamala Harris has consistently identified as both Black and South Asian. Her father is from Jamaica, and she has highlighted her heritage and experiences, including her education at Howard University, a historically Black institution. Harris is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a historically Black sorority.
The ongoing debate over Harris’ racial identity has sparked significant discussion and controversy, raising questions about the intersection of race, identity, and politics in the public sphere.
