Gombe State Governor: I cannot pay N70, 000 minimum wage

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has declared that his administration is unable to pay the newly announced national minimum wage of N70,000. This statement was made during a meeting held on July 30, 2024, at the Government House in Gombe. The meeting included labor leaders, civil society organizations, and traders’ associations, and was convened in anticipation of a nationwide protest related to wage issues.

Governor Yahaya explained that Gombe State’s financial limitations are a significant barrier to implementing the increased wage. Despite the recent boost in federal allocations to Gombe and other states following the removal of petrol subsidies by President Bola Tinubu, the governor stated that the state’s budget remains insufficient to cover the new wage requirements. He highlighted that even the previous minimum wage of N30,000 was difficult for many state governments, including Gombe, to sustain.

Additionally, the governor brought attention to other pressing issues facing the state. He noted that Gombe has not yet received the 20 trucks of rice promised by the federal government. These trucks were intended to help alleviate the economic challenges faced by residents, further compounding the financial strain on the state’s administration.

In summary, Governor Yahaya’s statements reflect the ongoing financial struggles of Gombe State in meeting new wage standards and addressing other economic challenges, despite recent increases in federal funding
