Tragic Landslide in India Claims 56 Lives and Leaves Many Trapped

A devastating landslide in Kerala, India, has claimed the lives of at least 56 people and left many others trapped. The disaster struck the hilly areas of Wayanad district early on July 30, 2024, after heavy rains caused massive landslides.

The landslides have caused severe destruction, with homes swept away and roads rendered impassable. Rescue operations are underway, but they are facing significant challenges due to continuous rainfall and the collapse of a vital bridge.

State minister AK Saseendran has indicated that it will take several hours to fully assess the damage. The Indian army has dispatched over 200 personnel to aid in search and rescue efforts.

Local hospitals are treating around 70 injured individuals, and approximately 250 people have been rescued and moved to safety. In addition to the 36 confirmed deaths in Wayanad, nine more bodies have been discovered in the Chaliyar river, which flows into Malappuram district.

Social media videos have shown the devastating effects, including muddy waters flooding streets and forests, sweeping away homes, and stranding people and vehicles.

The collapse of a crucial bridge connecting Chooralmala to Mundakkai and Attamala has further complicated rescue efforts by isolating these areas. Both local and national disaster relief teams are working hard to assist those affected.

Efforts are being made to airlift trapped families and construct a temporary bridge. Schools and colleges in 10 out of 14 districts are closed as the region remains on high alert for more heavy rains.
