A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening, July 28, in Rochester, NY. Gunfire erupted at Maplewood Park around 6:20 p.m., resulting in one death and six injuries. The park was bustling with people enjoying a summer barbecue when the shooting caused chaos and panic.
One victim, a person in their 20s, lost their life, and another is in life-threatening condition. Five other victims were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The identities of the deceased and injured have not been released as authorities work to notify family members.
The Rochester police are still investigating the incident and have not yet determined the exact number of shooters involved. “At this point, we don’t know how many people were shooting,” said Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello. “We are trying to work our way through as many witnesses as we can.”
Police Chief David Smith confirmed that they are searching for more than one shooter, though it remains unclear if the gunmen were part of the gathering or came from outside. Investigators are meticulously combing the crime scene and examining ballistic evidence found at the park.
Authorities are urging anyone with information, videos, or tips related to the shooting to come forward. “Anything on who decided to — on a Sunday afternoon where everybody’s out barbequing, having a good time — decided to pull out a gun for whatever reason, whether there’s a dispute going, short term, long term, whatever it was,” said Bello. “Somebody that pulled out a gun, obviously that’s incredibly unacceptable in our society.”
As the investigation continues, police are determined to find those responsible. “To the folks who did this, I will be seeing you,” Chief Smith warned.
This tragic event has shaken the community, and authorities are committed to bringing justice to the victims and their families.
