Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has shed light on the harsh realities for women in Nigerian politics. Speaking at an event organized by the ECOWAS Female Parliament Association, she described Nigerian politics as an extremely tough field for women.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan pointed out that the high cost of running for office in Nigeria makes it particularly hard for women, who often have fewer financial resources compared to men. She shared her own experiences, noting that the demanding nature of Nigerian politics has forced her to become tougher and more resilient. She admitted that this toughness has changed her, making her less emotional unless deeply moved.
The senator also emphasized that the expensive nature of politics in Nigeria is a major barrier for women. She is interested in exploring the independent candidature system used in Liberia as a potential way to make elections more accessible.
In her speech, she spoke about the personal sacrifices she has made, including surviving accidents and enduring physical hardships. She also discussed the cultural and dignity issues women face in politics and urged male leaders to support and encourage women rather than undermine them.
Finally, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan advised women to carefully plan their political campaigns and avoid making unrealistic promises. She also highlighted her work with Senator Ireti Kingibe on a bill aimed at increasing women’s representation in government to 45%.
