In a recent development, 180 members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have endorsed a motion calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The motion, introduced by Obi Aguocha, represents a significant stance by the minority caucus.
During a meeting, Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, urged his colleagues to adopt a unified position on Kanu’s case and pursue a political resolution. This motion gained momentum after Aguocha’s visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari and his successful efforts to mobilize support from 50 fellow lawmakers across different parties and the southeast caucus of the National Assembly.
Aguocha has highlighted the need for a peaceful dialogue to resolve Kanu’s situation, rather than extending legal confrontations. He argues that addressing the issue through political means could foster national unity and rebuild trust among Nigeria’s various communities.
The caucus’s backing includes members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This broad support underscores the crucial role of legislative bodies in promoting peace and stability in Nigeria.
