The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has officially denied any connection to a WhatsApp message currently making rounds on social media, which discourages protests in Lagos. The message, which has raised several questions about why protests frequently target Lagos and suggests starting from one’s own state, has been declared false by the police.
In a statement released on Sunday night, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that the message did not originate from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). “The message, which poses several questions and opinions about protests, does not essentially represent the ideals or views of the Nigeria Police Force,” he stated.
ACP Adejobi urged the public to disregard the misleading message and any other similar content falsely attributed to the NPF. He assured that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to maintaining peace and order throughout the country. “We do not endorse any message that could incite division, violence, or destruction,” he added.
The IGP stressed the importance of peaceful and constructive engagement by Nigerians, particularly during these times of planned nationwide protests. From August 1st to 10th, citizens, especially the youth, have scheduled protests to draw the government’s attention to the prevailing hardships in the country.
The IGP also issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news. Such actions are criminal and punishable under the Cybercrime law. He urged everyone to be cautious and verify information before sharing it to avoid the spread of false narratives that could disrupt the peace and unity of the nation.
Nigeria Police Force reiterates its dedication to fostering a peaceful environment and calls on all Nigerians to contribute positively to the progress and unity of the country.
