In a disturbing case, two armed robbery suspects, Lekan Taiwo and Olasunkanmi Oluwaseyi, were arrested by the Oyo State Police Command. These men have confessed to a series of heinous crimes, including raping older women and murdering victims who resisted or couldn’t provide money.
The suspects, usually armed with cutlasses, were known for robbing victims in their neighborhoods during the day and invading homes at night. They were part of a group of 41 suspects paraded on July 19, 2024, by the State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi.
One of their crimes involved the murder of a 35-year-old man, Yisa Mohammed, on July 4. He was traveling with his wife to Igbagbo Village when the suspects attacked them. Mohammed’s wife, who managed to escape, reported the incident to the police. The suspects later admitted to killing Mohammed over an unpaid debt of N5,500 for labor.
In another incident, the suspects killed a 60-year-old woman, Mrs. Nike Odediran, earlier that same day. The case was reported by her son at the Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters. The suspects claimed they killed her because she couldn’t provide any money.
During their confession, Lekan Taiwo, a 25-year-old motorcycle mechanic from Ibadan, explained how he and his partner resorted to robbery and murder out of desperation. Taiwo stated that they targeted victims who appeared to have money, often attacking passersby and invading homes at night. They admitted to killing a total of five victims.
The suspects also revealed that they raped female victims, including elderly women in their 50s and 60s, during their home invasions. They forced husbands to lie face down while they assaulted the women, believing that only the rape of minors was illegal.
Taiwo recounted his difficult upbringing, starting to smoke cannabis at a young age and struggling with poverty. He described how he and his partner, Sunkanmi, would plan their robberies to get money for food and other needs. Sunkanmi, 27, confirmed Taiwo’s account and admitted to participating in the murders after initially being unaware of Taiwo’s violent actions.
This case highlights the tragic consequences of crime and the devastating impact on victims and their families. The Oyo State Police Command continues its efforts to bring justice to the victims and their loved ones.
