Tragic Incident: Final Year Student Killed Over N150 in Bayelsa

In a heartbreaking incident on Monday, a final-year student of Niger Delta University (NDU), Francis Palowei, was killed by some local youths in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The tragic event occurred at a popular relaxation spot known as the sand dump, where students frequently gather to unwind and climb the sand pile for fun.

According to a resident who wished to remain anonymous, youths in the area had started imposing a fee on students wishing to climb the sand dump. While the usual charge was N150, the youths demanded N500 from Francis and his friends. An argument ensued, and the situation escalated when the youths called for backup, including a notorious cultist. This confrontation tragically led to Francis’s death.

Francis Palowei, who hailed from Obrigbene town in Ekeremor Local Government Area, was a promising young man with a bright future. His untimely death has plunged his family, friends, and the university community into mourning. Notably, his father is a high-ranking police officer.

Mr. Ndoni Igezi, the Public Relations Officer at Niger Delta University, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He assured that the police are actively addressing the situation to prevent further escalation. ASP Musa Muhammed, a police spokesman in Bayelsa State, also confirmed the incident and stated that additional security personnel have been deployed to the area. A manhunt for the suspected killers is underway.
