Nigerian Navy Rescues Trafficking Victims and Foils Robbery Attempt

In recent maritime operations, the Nigerian Navy has demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding Nigerian waters and combating illegal activities. From July 9-13, 2024, several incidents highlighted the Navy’s proactive measures and successful interventions.

During this period, the Nigerian Navy rescued eight women who were victims of human trafficking. These women, aged between 18 and 23, were intercepted en route to Benin Republic aboard a wooden passenger boat. The Navy’s Quick Response Team from Forward Operating Base BADAGRY played a crucial role in apprehending the suspects responsible for their trafficking.

Additionally, in separate incidents, the Navy’s efforts led to the rescue of two fishermen whose boat capsized near Lekki Anchorage due to rough seas. Prompt action by Forward Operating Base LEKKI personnel ensured their safe return.

The Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft intercepted eight male stowaways attempting to board MV NORTHERNLIGHT through its rudder compartment. These stowaways admitted their intention to travel abroad illegally, highlighting the Navy’s vigilance in preventing unauthorized maritime activities.

Moreover, Nigerian Navy personnel at Forward Operating Base IBAKA, Akwa Ibom State, successfully thwarted a sea robbery attempt along the Uyenghe River. Despite facing gunfire from the robbers, the Navy’s swift response prevented any harm and forced the perpetrators to retreat.

Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, reiterated the Nigerian Navy’s dedication under Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla to maintaining maritime security. The Navy remains vigilant against sea robbery, human trafficking, and other illegal activities within Nigeria’s territorial waters.

As the Nigerian Navy continues to uphold these standards, stakeholders and operators in the maritime domain are reminded to adhere to legal protocols. Together, these efforts contribute to a safer and more secure environment for legitimate economic activities in Nigeria’s waters.
