FIFA is currently investigating a video that has surfaced on social media, allegedly showing members of the Argentina national team singing a song with racist lyrics about French players. This incident has caused significant controversy and backlash.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has strongly condemned the video and announced plans to file a complaint with FIFA. In a statement, a FIFA spokesperson said, “FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into. FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, including players, fans, and officials.”
The controversy gained more attention when Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana described the video as “uninhibited racism.” The video was posted by his club teammate Enzo Fernandez. Fernandez later issued an apology on social media, explaining that he was caught up in the excitement of the celebrations and acknowledged the song’s offensive language. “There is absolutely no excuse for these words,” Fernandez wrote.
Chelsea Football Club also responded to the incident with a statement, emphasizing its commitment to diversity and inclusion. “Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities, and identities feel welcome.”
This incident is part of a troubling trend of racial abuse directed at France’s national team players of African descent. Notably, striker Kylian Mbappe faced racial abuse following France’s loss to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final.
The controversy has overshadowed Argentina’s recent victory, where they secured a record 16th Copa America title by defeating Colombia 1-0 in Miami Gardens. Despite the celebratory atmosphere, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of racism in football and the need for continued efforts to combat discrimination in the sport.
