Spain Wins Fourth European Championship, Defeating England Again

Spain has won the European Championship for the fourth time, a new record. For England, it’s another close loss in their long history of coming up short.

Spain dominated the tournament and defeated England 2-1 in the final on Sunday. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal in the 86th minute.

Oyarzabal, who replaced captain Alvaro Morata, scored from a cross by Marc Cucurella just as the game seemed headed for extra time.

England, where soccer began, still hasn’t won a major men’s title since the 1966 World Cup. England’s players watched sadly as Morata lifted the trophy with confetti and fireworks in the stadium built for the 1936 Olympics.

Spain’s 2024 title adds to their wins in 1964, 2008, and 2012.

“We are champions of Europe,” said Nico Williams, who scored Spain’s first goal in the 47th minute. England’s Cole Palmer equalized in the 73rd minute. “We are very happy and hope to win the World Cup in 2026.”
