Collins Orji, who pretended to be a medical doctor and opened a clinic in Ngarabe, Ekureku, Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, has been arrested by the police. He is currently detained in Obubra prison.
Orji operated a hospital named Excellent Hospital, Ngarabe, Ekureku, without obtaining a license for himself or the facility. The Cross River State Task Force on Health Quality and Anti Quackery discovered this on July 11, 2024.
Further investigations by the task force revealed that Orji had previously operated a medical facility called St. Collins Hospital in Ugep, Ibogo, Biase LGA. He also ran a clinic named Common Wealth Clinic and finally Excellent Hospital, Ngarabe Ekureku in Abi LGA before his arrest.
According to Dr. Dan Abubakar, the Head of Cross River State Task Force on Health Quality and Anti Quackery, when they visited Orji with a team of police officers, they discovered he was not a medical doctor and had no medical training.
Orji’s facility was also found to be unregistered with the state government. He had no license to practice medicine and surgery in Nigeria and had not attended any medical institution. Despite this, he carried out surgical operations on his patients in his consulting room, without the assistance of qualified nurses.
In a video circulating online, Orji is seen claiming to be a trained homeopathic doctor, but he had no proof to validate this claim.
Dr. Abubakar stated, “Satisfied that he had no registrable credentials with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, we sealed Excellent Hospital, Ngarabe, Ekureku, before we took him to the police station, Itigidi.”
Orji appeared before the Magistrate Court, Itigidi, where he was granted bail. Unable to meet the bail conditions, he was remanded in Obubra prison, and the matter was adjourned until August 9, 2024, for further hearing.
